In this new story from well-regarded Sherlockian Miles Elward, Holmes's investigations take him from foggy London to autumnal Massachusetts and the ill-famed town of Salem. A simple affair of a stolen Bible develops into a tale of well-hidden family secrets and accusations of witchcraft. All of which are subject to Holmes's characteristic rigour and Watson's story-telling.

Miles Elward has been praised for his "realistic" stories which capture the original spirit of Baker Street. Sherlock Holmes in Canterbury and Sherlck Holmes and the Missing Lady Macbeth are both available on . This 23,000 word novella is the latest of his tales to be electronically published.

I hope I do this excellent story justice in my review!

Part 1 -- The Theft of the Bible
In the winter of 1899/1900, a bible -- popularly known as the Witches' Bible and rumored to be cursed -- is donated by a noble British family to a church in Salem, Massachusetts. An American clergyman named Methuselah Scantlebury comes to England to accept the gift. When the bible is stolen from him, Holmes is hired to recover it, and recover it he does. But that's only half the story!

Part 2 -- The Persecution of the Rev. Scantlebury
Eight months later, in the autumn of 1900, Holmes is hired by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to come to the States to help resolve a major scandal undermining the State Bank. At the conclusion of that case, while still in the Massachusetts, Holmes and Watson are contacted by the wife of the Rev. Scantlebury to find out why the clergyman has seemed haunted ever since he returned from England. He has been sent messages that say, "When shall we three meet again?" which appear to terrify him. He has been mumbling, "They are coming, they are coming," and has been unable to sleep at night. Eventually the bible again vanishes and then, so does the Rev. Scantlebury! Two mysterious women dressed all in black are accused of kidnapping and perhaps murdering him, and Holmes notes that they are lucky they are not also being accused of witchcraft, as such is the mood in Salem during this stormy fall season, in which the weather almost becomes another mysterious character in the story.

There finally comes a point where the Rev. Scantlebury must explain his odd behavior, and this is where the story takes the form of "The Sign of Four" or "A Study in Scarlet" -- but I have to say, Miles Elward brings forth a much more interesting and coherent (and shorter!) backstory than either "Sign" or "Study," and he fits the anecdote fairly smoothly into the body of his tale. In this way, the pastiche is actually better than the works it so closely resembles, because the tale is not interrupted right in the middle, only to turn into something completely different.

An excellent and totally convincing pastiche!
